I was recently admitted to the Department of Scheduled Admissions for a Hysterectomy. I had fasted as per instruction, organised my family at home, had family come from a distance to stay in a hotel and taken time off work.
I sat in DOSA for nearly 6 hours, only to be told by my consultant that my operation had been cancelled due to a lack of beds. Everything and everyone was ready to go, but no bed was available in the entire hospital for my aftercare.
I am shocked and appalled that despite this being a planned operation, where wards have warning that patients are coming in, there was no bed for me anywhere within ARI.
I received excellent care from all who I met during my stay, especially Ewa in DOSA who was kind and caring towards myself, a very upset and angry patient. My consultant came to tell me personally, which I appreciated also.
I now have to wait until I receive a further date for my procedure, when I will have to go through this all again, with no guarantees it won't happen again.
