"The Deaf community need interpreters not to be ignored"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Outpatients Department

(as a service user),

I'm profoundly deaf and communicate via Irish Sign Language (ISL) so I need an ISL interpreter to support my communication. This is noted on my hospital file. I was frustrated to arrive at my outpatient's appointment recently to find an interpreter had not been arranged. I was left sitting in the waiting room for over an hour. When I approached the staff members on duty, I was pointed at to sit down. Some staff members thought I could hear by shouting at me. I left as I was in pain, couldn't sit anymore and felt no one cared.  I felt angry, frustrated and exhausted.

Having an ISL interpreter present would have made a huge difference to my experience.  I had hoped to receive my test results and treatment plan but am now left waiting.  It would be reassuring for me and other Sign Language users to have confirmation of the interpreters booking in advance.

Hi venustc74,

My name is Emma, I am the deputy manager of OPD. Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback.

I am sorry to hear that you have had a negative experience when attending the Outpatients Department and can appreciate how frustrating this was for you. I have shared your experience with partial booking staff and with outpatients staff for learning purposes, as all patients attending OPD should have all their support needs met appropriately.

I have been involved with a similar situation recently where unfortunately the Irish language interpreter had not been arranged by partial booking prior to appointment. If this is you I believe that we were able to re-arrange a new appointment with the partial booking team and ensure that an interpreter was booked. My apologies if this was not you, and please get in touch with my department and I will ensure to reschedule you an appointment. Alternatively, you can contact partial booking team on 028610842.

Regards

Emma
