My friend's care immediately during and after her ectopic pregnancy was amazing in St John’s Hospital. She was well looked after and discharged home with worsening advice.

She had to be re-admitted due to pain and complications, now this isn’t so much about the care she received- but where she was admitted to… the maternity ward where new mums had just given birth to beautiful crying babies. My friend who had not only lost her baby, but experienced severe trauma with it unfortunately being an ectopic - to be placed in a maternity ward with babies...I feel it’s completely inappropriate and insensitive. Surely a bit of empathy and common sense would ensure she was placed somewhere she should not have to be reminded of the extreme loss she just experienced and re traumatised again 

I really hope you take this on board and make assurances that in the future this will not happen again. Thank you for your time.

Thank you for your sharing your feedback regarding your friend’s experiences at St John’s Hospital. I am so sorry to hear she suffered an ectopic pregnancy, this must have been a very difficult time for her, but I am pleased that she was well looked after during this time.

I was saddened to read that she suffered further complications and had to be re-admitted. I really appreciate your feedback about her being admitted to the maternity ward, and understand how this could be quite distressing for her or anyone in a similar position. Usually patients who have recently received care for an ectopic pregnancy are reviewed through our Early Pregnancy Service in hours or out of hours through Ward 12 which is the in-patient gynaecology ward. It is not routine to admit women who have either an unbooked pregnancy or diagnosed ectopic pregnancy to a maternity in-patient area as these women are cared for within our gynaecology clinical areas. Without knowing the details of your friend’s specific circumstances, I am unable to comment on why she was placed there, but I am really sorry for the upset caused.
