I recently (7th February 2025) attended ward 10B to have my appendix removed. Whilst this was planned as a day visit, I had extremely low blood pressure and was kept in a further 2 nights. I have to say that the care I received on the ward was excellent as were all the staff. However when it came to discharging me, the staff nurse was concerned that I had not opened my bowels for 4 days and said that he would give me some laxatives. When the doctor came round to sign off the discharge, he said it was ok to go home as I had passed wind even though I made it clear I had not been to the toilet for 4 days. For the following 2 days at home I spent in absolute agony unable to go to the toilet, to the extent that I rang 111 and they said they would send an emergency ambulance. I eventually went to the toilet during the expected 31/2 wait for the ambulance and subsequently cancelled it. My partner and myself were in a terrible state at the condition I was in and found it totally unacceptable that I should have been discharged without some intervention to help open my bowels. As I had just had an operation, you can imagine that straining to go to the toilet has left me in agony. I can only assume that the bed was needed and I had to be discharged as soon as possible. As I have previously said the care during my stay was first class but I feel the whole experience was traumatic and I am still suffering pain due to the lack of a simple procedure.
