Referred to Gynaecology consultant North Devon following some unusual (for me) bleeding. GP had previously examined me and ultrasound scan proved normal. At the appointment, the consultant invited me into the room. We talked about why I was there, they suggested a coil would sort out my issues. I agreed to think about it.
The consultant then asked if they could examine me. I agreed. They then went on to say they would do a biopsy, this was a surprise to me so I asked what biopsy. The consultant said they would take a biopsy of my uterus and told me not to worry, it would only hurt a little. I explained that I was not aware this would be happening and had I known, I would have taken some pain relief. Given no other option to consider, I felt obliged to proceed. I wish I hadn’t.
Inserting the speculum was uncomfortable, I don’t think they used any lubrication, it certainly did not feel cold or lubricated like it feels when usually examined in this way. They then went on to poke something in, telling me to take a deep breath, which I did but immediately shot up the bed with the sharp stabbing pain. This was then explained as them trying to open up my womb which was tight. I was in tears with the pain, sweating and unable to speak. The consultant and the nurse asked if I wanted to stop, which I nodded to because I couldn’t speak.
The consultant stopped immediately and took the speculum out. They then explained that as I couldn’t tolerate the biopsy, they would do it under a general anaesthetic.
I left the consultation feeling completely shocked and angry. I had not expected to feel pain like that and had not been prepared for it nor given any other options prior to starting the procedure.
I will not be going back to that consultant for any further procedures. I will ask for somebody else to do it. What an awful thing for anybody to have to go through without pain relief, full explanation or options. I am cross with myself for agreeing to it but you put your faith in the professionals don’t you?
