I gave birth on the Labour ward at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in January this year.
I received great care from the leith community midwifery and obstetrics team care prior to this. I felt listened to, advocated for and fully empowered throughout my whole pregnancy and after my baby was born.
Whilst on Labour ward staff were clear about what the medical advice was and the rationale, but also respected my decisions at times when my preference was to not follow this.
Complications at delivery were dealt with effectively and efficiently. Reassurance provided by staff during labour and especially delivery, helped me to remain (relatively) calm and gave me the confidence and belief that my body knew what it was doing.
Support following the birth for both my baby and I was timely and in-depth from midwives, paediatricians, the physiotherapist and health visitor. A post natal debrief several weeks after the birth with a consultant also provided an opportunity to reflect on the birth as well as plan ahead for any potential future pregnancies.
