"Access to Education"

About: Rampton Hospital

(as a service user),

I've just moved to Carlisle ward at Rampton hospital and I was told before I moved there that there was a maths group where patients get together and learn maths with each other.

I love maths and I'm very good at it, I used to study maths on Blake ward with other patients and I find working with other people very motivating and helpful because if you can't explain something simply to other people it proves you don't really understand it so teaching other people reinforces your learning.

I like teaching other people things and I know a lot more than just maths.

I been neglecting maths recently because all the people I used to study with on Blake have moved to medium secure and I was hoping I could get back into the spirit of things with the patients of Carlisle.

The problem is Carlisle has a staff member who does not seem to understand the importance of the above and I feel  I am being told we can't teach each other things because we are not qualified teachers!

I cannot express to you how angry and depressed that makes me and I don't know what I can do about it.

I hope you have some suggestions for me.

Thanks.

Thank you for raising this. I have contacted the patient education lead, to ask for their feedback.

Hello,

Thank you for raising your concern and it's great you have a passion for learning. Patients' Education run Maths classes and you are more than welcome to join one of these. If you speak to your OT and ask them to put a referral in, then we, (Patients' Education) will pick it up and look at a suitable group to place you in.

We have qualified teachers that deliver the sessions who will be able to adapt the learning to suit the needs of all the learners who attend.

We look forward to seeing you.

Thanks

Matthew Clayton
