"Mixed staff in A&E"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Accident & emergency

(as a service user),

I unfortunately had to attend A&E recently due to severe abdominal pain.

This was early morning prior to staff changing to the day shift.

The morning domestic/housekeepers started to arrive and I heard them using inappropriate language in reference to the hospital. This is not the way to speak about your workplace in front of patients that can hear this! This same domestic did kindly ask how I was and when I replied not great, they again used inappropriate language. There were children present so this member of staff really needs to be mindful of who is present and can hear them!

Nursing staff wise, I must say the nightshift nurse was so pleasant, despite coming to the end of their shift. They were so cheerful and upbeat still. Unfortunately I cannot say the same for the dayshift triage nurse.

I was in a great deal of pain. As soon as I felt the pain coming back I asked the nurses for further pain relief. I fully understand the area is very busy, however I had to ask several times and waited nearly an hour for pain relief, to then be told it takes a further 40minutes for it to take effect. Whilst being back in triage getting this medication, I apologised for being a pest, as this was how I was made to feel.

Furthermore, I continued to feel extremely unwell despite pain relief and my mum had to try and get staff's attention several times to say I felt very poorly. Again, I understand how busy A&E is, however, just to my embarrassment, I ended up throwing up in the waiting area! This led to me being extremely distressed. Thankfully a healthcare support worker had more compassion and treated me with dignity and respect. If only the nurse had the same level of empathy.

I’d also like the thank the Dr I saw, who was very kind to me and took on board on board my concerns. I really hope I do not need to re-attend. If I must, I hope to be treated slightly better than I was.
