"The pain was incredible"

About: South West Acute Hospital / Emergency Care and Medicine Services South West Acute Hospital / Endoscopy

(as the patient),

I recently had a colonoscopy done in enniskillen hospital to have a large polyp removed. I have to say it was brutal, the pain was incredible, I was in such a state when I left that hospital.  I had previously had a colonoscopy in another hospital for biopsies and removal of 2 small polyps, it was a totally different experience,  the pain was minimal and I actually watched the procedure on the monitor. I had no pain or problems after the procedure.

On the night of my procedure in Enniskillen I was in extreme pain and rang the out of hours doctor to see what pain meds I could take after having the sedation, the doctor recommended that I go to A&E to get checked and make sure there was nothing wrong.

I went to A&E, got x-rayed, all was OK. When I explained the pain and how different I was this time compared to the last time, I was told I was spoilt in the previous hospital. Apparently I got the better sedation which made the procedure much less painful and more comfortable. I still got no pain relief.  It is now 2 days since my procedure and I am still in pain and my stomach goes into spasms if I try to eat.

Why are 2 hospitals in the same trust not working to the same standards of care?  The level of care and attitude of the staff in these 2 hospitals was totally different.  Why is the comfort and outcome for the patient not  consistent within the Trust?  I was told that I would probably have to have regular colonoscopies in the future,  I could not go through that again.

Dear JMAyk68

Thank you for posting on this platform about your recent experiences in relation to your health care. Feed back is always embraced and gives us an idea of how we as a department and Trust, are performing.

My name is John Kerr, an Emergency Nurse Practitioner (ENP) base in the Emergency Department at the South West ACUTE hospital. I would like to take this opportunity to respond on behalf of our department.

I am to sorry to hear, your recent procedure, did not go as well as you had previously experienced, and that you required a visit to our department. While I cannot comment directly on individual cases, due to the anonymous nature of care opinion. I am disappointed to read you did not receive pain relief when required and that staff attitudes fell below, what you and us as a trust would expect. Once again I would like to offer my sincere apologies for this, which is unacceptable.

All staff work within the standards of their own governing bodies and are accountable for their own actions. It is my intention to post your comments on our notice board for ALL staff to read, learn and to act as a reminder to them, about their duty of care towards their patient.

Finally, I hope this response finds you well and is of a satisfactory nature to you. May this episode, not have a negative bearing, on any further investigative studies you may need to have in the future.

Kind regards

John Kerr
