"An awful experience made so bearable by such great care."

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Plastic Surgery & Burns (wards 45, 47, 48 & 49)

(as the patient),

I had an initial consultation in Dec 24. I met Mr Gilmour, consultant & Claire, Senior Nurse. Despite being terrified of what was ahead in dealing with my breast cancer, they were exceptionally understanding, fully explaining my options.

I opted for mastectomy with immediate DIEP Flap reconstruction and underwent my surgery at the end of Jan. I cannot praise the level of care highly enough. I’ve never been ill let alone had surgery. I was terrified counting the days down. From Anne Marie who handled my admission, Mr Gilmour who met me on arrival, to the wonderful anaesthetist team under Geraldine who totally reassured me as I was so nervous.  They were all amazing.

The care I received in Ward 48 was beyond my expectations.  Nothing was trouble. I felt like this was private care. Two weeks later I developed a seroma and was readmitted to Ward 47 for 4 nights.  Again the level of care was amazing. Those nurses have caring in their bloodstream. I was blown away. The doctors I met were all great, explaining fully what they were suggesting for treatment. Post discharge I continue under Claire's wonderful clinic where she looks after me and offers advice and reassurance.

Mr Gilmour is never far away popping in to check on me and so positive about my recovery.  6 weeks later and reflecting back. I am extremely impressed with the NHS.  My first experience and nothing at all like the press would have you believe.  I have never had any criticism (and I expected standards like private care).  What a great team of professionals in the plastic surgery team at the Royal. A credit to the NHS.

We are so lucky to have standards of healthcare and treatment such as this. I am so grateful to them for removing my cancer and rebuilding me. An awful experience made so bearable by such great care.  I cannot thank them enough. I wish I could authorise a big bonus for each and everyone!
