"Why are people just left to get on with things alone?"

About: Gartnavel Royal Hospital Goldenhill Resource Centre Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Accident & Emergency Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Neurology (Ward 53 and 67) Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Neuro-rehabilitation Unit (NRU)

(as a service user),

I was diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder in December 2024, the Neurologist at Queen Elizabeth Hospital was amazing. He made several referrals to relevant departments for me, Physiotherapy, Neuro Physio, Occupational Therapy and the Wellness Centre at Gartnavel. He also wrote to the Goldenhill Resource Centre for more of an input to my mental health.

The Goldenhill can no longer help me as I'm not in crisis and im back to the care of my Gp, the only option they could give me was a charity organisation that I went to years ago and I never heard back from them, so the trust just isn't there. I have now had no other option but to be treated privately, at significant cost.

Physiotherapy called me and no appointment was offered.

I have had an appointment with Neuro Physio who were very nice but unless I get any new symptoms I probably won't get another appointment, I do remain open to them until June which is helpful.

Occupational therapy came out and were very helpful gave me some equipment that will help me around my home.

I haven't heard anything from the Wellness Centre as of yet.

I waited almost a year for my appointment at Neurology and other than the referrals I was told to check out a website on my FND condition.

Why is there no national treatment service for people with Functional Neurological Disorder in Scotland or the UK? Why are people just left to get on with things alone? I read 1 in 4 appointments to neurology are being given a diagnosis of FND so it's hardly a rare disorder.

Before my diagnosis I was sent to A&E with stroke like symptoms, after 9 hours I was simply told to go home even though my left arm was dead, and I could barely walk and the staff seemed annoyed that I had came to A&E.

The second time I was sent to immediate assessment unit by my GP, my speech was slurred and I was limping. I had another long wait and ended up being admitted for 14 days. It's frustrating waiting along time to find out what's wrong to later find out there's no follow up treatment service for FND.

Dear Miss Mac,

I am so sorry to read about the issues you have experienced with regards to your condition and delayed diagnosis. This has obviously been an extremely frustrating and difficult time for you. With regards to your attendance to the Emergency department I would like to apologise for this, as this experience is not what we aim to provide for patients in our care. Feedback is vital to help us learn and improve, could you please email me direct at karen.hughes@ggc.scot.nhs.uk with your name and date of attendance and I will look into this further as care opinion doesn't share personal details.

with kind regards

karen
