"Unsuitable care of the elderly"

About: Basildon Hospital / General medicine Basildon Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a relative),

Admitted to Basildon hospital with pneumonia. Admitted and treated with antibiotics accordingly.

We (the family) have been trying impress that my dad was completely lucid and compes mentes prior to admission. But he's now saying abusive, hurtful, random things .

Had a memory test and been seen by the mental health team.  All fine. Infection markers are all going in the right direction. So why is my father lucid and able to answer his name, DOB, how many children, wife, when did the war end, who is the king and what year it is, but in the next breath tell us he's won 22 million on a horse, or the fella under the non existent TV in the corner has backed the wrong horse.

Left to sit in his own excrement, crying and degraded, after calling for 20 plus mins for assistance .

Went in on one occasion and had to remove the pad stuck to his bottom with dried excrement . They hadn't cleaned him properly. Why is this a problem? Because he has an open pressure sore, and has already been treated for severe infection only to place him at risk of further infection by failing to carry out the most basic of hygiene care and assistance. Diabetic, skin integrity poor, and bed bound. Changed his sheets, and washed and cleaned him ourselves .

Been told every morning he's had a restful night which isn't the case, as he's kept the bay awake .

Family have identified on two occasions the catheter blocked and had to request for it to be flushed.

Not listened to, given incorrect information and still given no answers as to why our Dad is saying and seeing such strange things amongst moments of complete lucidity and awareness.

More than welcome to reply with PALS contact details, I've already complained . I will complain to the CQC as well as any other agency with remit .

I've read the hospital trust's recent CQC report, and I feel it just compounds some of the experiences detailed here, regarding unsuitable care of the elderly .

I do wish to finish on a positive note and that is to commend the loveliest human being, one of the sisters and one of the student nurses on the ward supporting my dad.

At least tonight I can sleep with reassurance that my dad will be cared for properly as this sister will be there overseeing .  And I won't be given incorrect information when I call in the morning to check in on him.

As mentioned above, I have already complained. When I asked for the hospital complaints policy, I was told to apply under a FOI!

I fail to see how a public document that should be readily available needs to be requested under an FOI.

Is this done with the hopes that complaints don't go past pals stage? Or with a view to shutting down complainants by making people jump through unnecessary hoops?

This is the only hospital I know that requests an FOI for it's complaints policy.
