"Before and after procedures need addressing"

About: Lincoln County Hospital / General medicine

(as the patient),

I think the appointment bookers should not tell you that you'll be able to drive home after a bone marrow biopsy. This feels completely irresponsible. This is what I was told, setting an expectation that I would be fine afterwards. I was not fine, and I left the medical day care unit before I should have because I thought I was being 'weak' (because I had a lot of pain). By the time I got in the car to go home and sat down with my back and hips at 90 degrees, I was in excruciating pain which lasted for 6 hours. The nurse said they thought they'd caught the nerve during the procedure but still let me leave the unit, and only morphine alleviated this much later that evening. I was in absolute agony for hours. Thank goodness I had asked my husband to take me there and bring me back, but the journey home was unbelievably painful. If I had driven myself, as the appointment booker suggested, I could have crashed my car and killed myself due to the excruciating pain. I could not weight bear at all when I got out of the car at home and can only now, 4 days later, walk without crutches.

The nurse and assistant who completed the procedure were so very lovely to me but the expectation set before the procedure, and then being offered no advice or pain relief after saying there was a possibility that my nerve had been 'nicked', really was not good enough. Because I had not been warned that it might be very painful (and therefore coming into the unit with the expectation that I would be able to drive home) just made me feel like a complete weakling when I experienced such pain - this stopped me from saying 'I can't leave, I'm in agony'. I felt as if I was just expected to carry on.

I'm grateful that I was fitted in so quickly for this procedure and I understand that the procedure was necessary, but I feel the ‘before’ and ‘after’ procedures need addressing as I have been left with an experience that I can only describe as barbaric, and I'm no shrinking violet. I'm a tough lady, but this experience was horrific for me.

Hi Off102

Thank you for sharing this with and and it sounds absolutely awful, and you’re completely justified in feeling that the way your procedure was handled was unacceptable. It’s deeply concerning that you felt this way and were given unrealistic expectations, especially any pain and impact of the biopsy. If they had properly informed you, you could have prepared for the possibility of severe pain, arranged for adequate support, and ensured proper post-procedure care.

We would like to speak to you about this and if you are able to contact our PALS team via ulth.pals.nhs.net, they will be able to liaise with the teams for you to address the issue around better explanations on what to expect before and after a bone marrow biopsy. If you quote CO133722 in any correspondence this enables the team to see your story.

Regards

Sharon
