About: Causeway Hospital / Accident & Emergency Causeway Hospital / Minor Injuries Unit

(as the patient),

A&E, Causeway Hospital. Sent to minor injuries. Had bloods taken 4 hours later. Doctors are extremely thin on the ground. Hours pass without seeing a single doctor attend either of the two assessment rooms. This is a Saturday night and it’s not really that busy. There simply needs to be more doctors made available! Coming up to 5 hours after entering A&E (on advice of Dalriada Dr on call) and still waiting to see a doctor.

My name is Victoria McCrory and I am the Assistant Clinical Services Manager for Causeway ED.

I am sorry to hear that you have recently been unwell and had to attend the department for assessment and treatment.

I am sorry for the delays which you faced whilst attending the department. I can confirm that on Saturday night the department was operating over and above capacity. This results in delays in the time in which patients are seen by a clinician. Patients are reviewed by Drs in order of clinical acuity, and at times this can result in some individuals having to wait longer than we would like.

I will ensure that your feedback is shared with senior management within the department, for learning. Thank you for taking the time to leave this feedback; all feedback is important as it helps inform service improvement and drives change within the department.

Victoria thank you so much for responding to my post.

I attended A&E on the basis that although my injury was minor, due to underlying health issues there was some concern by the Dalriada Doctor who advised me to attend A&E.

After triage I was sent to Minor Injuries. That was fine and I appreciate there were many others who needed more urgent attention than me.

My wound needed some attention before it was dressed and I was discharged. I was more than happy with the care I received but I was left wondering whether it actually needed a doctor to tend to the wound. I suspect it could just have easily been dealt with by a specialist nurse which could have relieved pressure on the whole system.

Just my thoughts.
