"Worry about how they support vulnerable people"

About: NHS 24 / Breathing Space (Phoneline)

(as a service user),

I recently called the service as I was experiencing some anxiety. I have called Breathing Space in the past and it has been a very positive experience. However I called last week and I was actually quite disturbed by the calibre of advisor I got. I had mentioned something about my children and they proceeded to spend nearly 10 minutes speaking about their own children and telling me what I should be doing when speaking with the school. No boundaries at all and when I suggested that my kids were not the reason I was calling they said they understood because they had also been in denial about it. I feel they shared far too much.

I was actually calling about a change in my case load at work which had been stressful. I thought long and hard about bringing this to your attention. I am a health professional and it has made me think twice about if I would recommend my clients call the service. I felt this staff member was loud, abrasive and had their own stuff going on that flooded out in the call. Their answer to my anxiety was to practise self care but there was no depth to their advice and they would have been well just telling me to have a bath and count sheep.

I have not decided if I am going to make a formal complaint but I feel very strongly that this advisor had their own agenda and I would worry about how they would support vulnerable people. So worrying and disappointing.

Dear Julia7,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience of using the Breathing Space service.

I read your story with concern and I am very sorry to learn you have been left feeling worried and disappointed after your call. Please be assured this is not the sort of experience we wish for callers.

I would like the opportunity to explore your contact with Breathing Space further. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can contact me by email at Patient.Experience@nhs24.scot.nhs.uk, including your Care Opinion user name and I would be pleased to arrange a further review.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your story on Care Opinion. I hope to hear from you soon.

Best wishes,
