"Lengthy wait times trying to contact GP surgery"

About: General practices in Lanarkshire

(as the patient),

I needed to contact my surgery for an appointment today. I wanted to see a specific GP for a non urgent appointment. The system for making appointments is to phone at 8.30 on the day, it's not possible to book in advance.

It usually takes over 100 calls snd nearly 30 mins to get through. Today it took 256 calls in 35 mins. The doctor I need to see doesn't work today, so I know I'm going to repeat this again next week on one of their working days to try to see the doctor.

If the practice had a queueing system where you were told what number you were then it would be so much less stressful. By 8.30 children are needing to be taken to school, and on my working days I've already started my working hours so I can't sit for 35 mins for a non urgent appointment. If there was a queue I could be working while I wait.

I'd like to stress, the practice is great, I almost always get an appointment when I need it, and if there are non but it's urgent the duty doctor will always help. I just think their booking system is really letting them down and it seems like an easy fix.

Dear Flynn1234,

Thank you for sharing your experience of your GP practice.

I am sorry to hear about the trouble you are having getting through to book a non urgent GP appointment. I can only imagine how frustrating this must be for you and I can understand the extra stress and pressure this can cause you in the mornings when trying to start work or take kids to school but not knowing where you are in the queue.

GPs are independent contractors and as such are not registered to respond on Care Opinion. They are responsible for investigating any concerns about their practice. Please could I ask that you contact the practice manager who will be able to investigate your concerns and provide you with a personal response?

Best Wishes,

Jenni
