"I would like the matter to be addressed"

About: Causeway Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a parent/guardian),

I took my daughter to A & E today as her abdominal pain was getting worse and was now stopping her from sleeping. My daughter had attended an outpatient clinic and was told to go to A and E if her pain got any worse as there was still ongoing investigations into this pain which she has had for four weeks .

After triage we we’re called in by a Dr. I found their attitude from the off came across as very uncaring and unsympathetic. I explained that my daughter had attended A and E and clinics in relation to this pain and was having ongoing investigations.

I asked for a gynae referral as my daughter was now having symptoms of the pain going into her groin and was similar to a gynae condition I would have pain with. Dr said no I don’t think that is warranted as her other scans were ok. I explained that this condition cannot be picked up on these scans and they started to get very defensive when I suggested that her pain could be gynae related. They started raising their voice saying that is nonsense and accusing me of being rude. I didn't feel I was being rude I was showing concern as any parent would do if their child was in pain never mind without a diagnosis.

I felt intimated in the room, I don't believe they were in anyway acting professional or being empathetic to my daughter being in severe pain. I called staff in as being in the room made me feel very awkward with them and my daughter was crying. The staff that came in were very helpful and so was a Nurse and another Senior member of staff.

The other Senior member of staff took over my daughters care and all the other staff were very professional and caring.  I would like the matter to be addressed with the staff member as I have extreme concerns about their attitude and professionalism towards other patients, especially those who are vulnerable and cannot stand up for themselves.
