I was moved from SDU to Blake when I was admitted with a fairly bad tonsillitis and what also turned out to be epiglottitis. I felt so unwell, and was unable to eat or drink for approx 6 days. This led to me feeling absolutely rubbish. I was given IV fluids - which were an absolute god send! IV antibiotics and daily IV steroids. My cannulas kept tissuing and staff struggle to recannulate me and I think this is mainly because I was so dehydrated. The doctors reviewed me and passed a camera down my nose to observe the back of my throat, which is when they discovered there oedema and diagnosed me with epiglottitis - changing my IV antibiotics from benpen and metro, to 2g ceftriaxone. This is when my treatment started finally helping me feel better. I am forever grateful for this!!
I was concerned about my kidneys as everything I tried to eat or drink just burned, and so I didn't eat or drink properly for around 6 days.
My only concern about this admission is that no-one checked my blood sugar levels or seemed concerned about me eating or drinking. It definitely slowed down my recovery and attributed to me feeling worse.
The staff were fantastic. I must say in particular Myclair and Rasa. They were on the night shifts and introduced themselves to every patient, despite us hearing their name from their introduction to other patients! this made a HUGE difference in feeling welcomed and looked after. Rasa was very thorough and the only staff member that I observe clean the BP cuff and sats probe between every patient, every single time. She was kind, compassionate, knowledgeable and polite. I felt incredibly safe and looked after. Equally Myclair was friendly, kind, compassionate, knowledgeable and thorough. Nothing was too much trouble. The nights were very busy with confused and agitated patients, but they appeared to manage this with skill and never once heard anyone complain.they were efficient with everything, I was constantly offered analgesia, water, food, checked I had a call bell within reach and they were very approachable.
I was also looked after by Hera and Glad, a nurse called Sarah and a blonde HCA (unsure of her name as she didn't introduce herself but she was very lovely) and Emily looked after me on my last day.
The team were fantastic and very friendly, knowledgeable.
Ward assistants and cleaners were friendly and lovely.
One slight grumble was I was sleeping in the day time as feeling very unwell in the afternoon, and someone started cleaning at the end and side of my bed fairly vigorously and it made me jump awake, not ideal when you're feeling unwell and in pain!
In general a great experience, and I'm so very grateful to everyone for getting me better and getting me home to my babies!!
"I'm so very grateful to everyone"
