"An amazing service"

About: Medicine for the Elderly / The Medical Unit Occupational Therapy / Community Occupational Therapy

(as a service user),

My partner and I were both poorly in medical ward Arbroath Infirmary. The care we both received from a whole team of different professionals.  A real multidisciplinary approach. Initially my mobility was poor  the OT came to see me and assessed my initial needs . Soon she had me walking initially with a zimmer. When I was well enough to be discharged the OT asked me what kind of help both my partner and I would need that would help to promote our independent.. she went to our house with a special chair for the kitchen which would enable me to prepare our food without having to stand. She also suggested a trolley which would enable me to transfer our meals hot drinks etc. But still having the support. For my mobility. She also ensured my partners needs were also met at home. With an extra zimmer for him upstairs a commode for downstairs and one upstairs. Unfortunately his mobility is really poor.

The OT also gave me lots of information for extra support from the ' enable ' team. Carers would come in as often as necessary for the first 6 weeks we were at home. This was to help me care for my partner but the OT knew that because of my own health it would have been really difficult for me to actually be hands on with his personal care. This service really was invaluable to us and it was exactly as the OT described.

Since coming home we have had home visits from her and she identified  other things that would make life easier for my partner. I found her incredibly approachable and she really listened to us very carefully identifying our needs. I really am so grateful for all that she done for us. I'm happy to say i no longer require my zimmer and my strength is certainly so much better. We really would not have been able to be as independent at home if her initial assessment was not so accurate. She is still assisting us for example my partner had a lot of falls we identified an area in our bedroom where an extra rail would be useful. I contacted her and explained what had happened and how we had identified an area for a rail. She came to visit agreed an extra early changed everything for me would give my partner extra support and confidence that would really help to promote his independence and give him the confidence he required when getting out of bed  to go to the bathroom.

I just wanted to thank the amazing service delivery we both received from her. The initial assement she carried out  really changed everything for me. She gave me direction and she also gave me hope. As I really could not see how we were actually going to manage at home. The OT in question was Cat who has helped us both so much in all the areas that I have highlighted.

Dear Libra23,

Thank you so much for providing such extensive feedback about your recent support from our occupational therapy service, both in Arbroath Infirmary and at home. It sounds like she really has made a difference to you and your husbands ability to manage at home safely and has been able to continue to provide valuable support when needed.

I am so glad your experience has been such a positive one and will pass on your lovely feedback to Cat.

Many thanks

Lorraine
