"Issues with the pain relief regime"

About: Musgrave Park Hospital / Day Procedure Unit - Withers 5A

(as a service user),

I would like to express my gratitude to the Trust for my timely surgery and my efficient progress through the care system.

Particular thanks to: Dr Karayiannis, his Secretary Rhonda and the lovely lady who organised my pre med. I appreciate the NHS in general is under immense pressure to clear a large back up of surgeries and was grateful to have been included on Dr Karayiannis' schedule at short notice.

My post surgery care was wonderful, provided by excellent, good humoured staff, and the food wasn't too shabby either! Compliments to the chefs!

However, my concern and motivation for providing this feedback is the post operative pain relief regime at Musgrave. It is inadequate and should be addressed for the benefit of future patients. Having had a previous hip replacement surgery in 2003, I had been provided with an opioid syringe driver. This was essential and eased my pain through the initial 12 hrs or so. Unfortunately this was not the case during my stay this time. Pain relief was rationed and ineffective. Ironically, upon discharge, I was provided with a large amount of slow & quick release Oxycodone; I still have two tablets left...

As I say, my experience overall has been excellent, my only issue is with the pain relief regime.

Hi (Eric271 )

My name is Dr Seamus O’Brien and I want to thank you for posting your story on Care Opinion. Thank you so much for taking the time to post such truly lovely comments about how the staff in Musgrave Park Hospital looked after you. This has already been passed on to the staff you mention.

I sincerely apologise for your experience regarding post operative pain relief regime and I have already passed on your concerns to the Assistant Service Manager (ASM) and the relevant staff in Musgrave Park Hospital who will in due course investigate your concerns and report back to you. I would like to speak to you by phone to help with this situation.

To enable us to fully investigate and respond to you - Please contact PatientExperience@belfasttrust.hscni.net and leave your patient details and contact number (ideally a mobile number) and the Facilitator will ensure this is passed to the ASM and myself.

Thank you for your positive comments. However, I want to apologise for your negative experience regarding pain management and I will review your clinical records when I have your patient information and will ensure your comments are passed on to the relevant team for investigation. We will fully investigate and take learning from your experience and get back to you in a timely manner.

Many thanks.
