"Breaking my hip and the after care i recieved"

About: Intermediate and Transitional Care / Community Rehabilitation Team Physiotherapy / Domiciliary Physiotherapy Royal Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency Trauma & Orthopaedics / Ward 4B

(as the patient),

My story starts on Boxing Day 2024. it was in the early hours of the morning when for some reason i rolled from one side of the bed till the other where i continued to roll onto the floor. i like a cat landed on all fours. I knew at once that my left leg was not in a good way. I tried to move it to get up of the floor but it simply refused to move. Living on my own i knew it was up to me to call someone for help, this was a problem as my phone was on the opposite side of the bed. So i had to pull myself up onto the bed and roll back across it to reach my phone.

After calling all members of my family, to which i got no reply i finally dialed 999 and requested an ambulance. Shortly afterwards my daughter arrived just before the arrival of the ambulance. The ambulance crew checked me over and administered some strong pain relief before wheeling out into the ambulance.

I arrived at A&E department of the RVH and was quickly seen to and confirmed that i had broken my hip. I then was taken up to a ward where i lay awaiting surgery which took place end of Dec after a couple of days recovering i was deemed fit to travel to Marylands where my rehab started.

I spent around @ months there before being released home with a care package in place alongside the services of the Community Rehabilitation Service. taking the lead was my Physio Fiona, she give me a fitness routine to do and alongside Fiona i had a team of Physio's checking in with 3 days a week, helping me with my exercises.

I must say that all the health care workers who helped get me on my feet again have been of the highest professionals.

But it was really down to Fiona and her team that i am able to get about as quickly as i have done. i can not speak highly enough of the much valued work that they do.

Without them i would still be sitting in a chair feeling sorry for myself. Instead i am planning a holiday in August.

Dear avocetfw65,

Thank you for taking the time to share your journey with us.

As the manager of the Community Rehabilitation Service, it is lovely to hear that you found the input of Fiona and the team so beneficial, and that they have helped you get back on your feet again.

After you had such a traumatic end to 2024, I'm delighted to hear that you are planning a holiday in August - I hope you have a lovely time away.

I wish you all the best as you continue your recovery and will pass on your kind words to Fiona and the rest of the team.

Best wishes,
Lucy Jordan
