"Treatment and management of missed miscarriage"

About: Maternity care (wards 68, 72 &73) / Maternity Assessment/Triage The Princess Royal Maternity Unit / Gyn Ward and Outpatient Clinics

(as the patient),

I discovered in September at nearly 12 weeks pregnant I had had a missed miscarriage. it took almost 6 weeks for me to receive a D&C as miscarriage wasn't coming away on its own and due to previous pregnancy trauma could not take the tablets to pass the tissue.

6 weeks I had to wait for surgical management while carrying my dead baby and in agonising pain as my body was trying to miscarry but it just wouldn't come. When I finally received the surgical management my allocated nurse was 7 months pregnant, only adding to my trauma. I am now nearing what should have been my due date and only now feel ready to share my horrific experience.

I really feel the NHS need to have a look at their policies and duty of care surrounding miscarriage management. I was made to feel like an inconvenience during one of the hardest times in my life and then had a big baby bump flaunted in my face by my allocated nurse while in for the surgery I had waited an agonising amount of time for. It was a horrible experience made worse by the disregard of my situation when in for treatment.

Dear Bananarama,

I want to express my deepest apologies for the poor service experience you received within NHSGGC. We truly acknowledge that this is pivotal and emotional time and I am sincerely sorry that we did not provide the care and support you needed and deserved.

I fully understand having a member of staff who was visibly pregnant caused distress and please accept our apology and what must have felt very insensitive. Please be reassured that this would not be intentional, however, we would never want anyone to feel so upset.

Your feedback is invaluable to us as we always strive to improve our services and ensure that we are responsive to feedback.

Once again, I deeply regret your experience and I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss this in more detail should you feel this would be helpful.

Best wishes,

Mairi McDermid

Associate Chief Midwife
