Mum was diagnosed with dementia four years ago and had dramatically declined over the last two years. The mental health team at Belmont suggested an Admiral nurse call to see us. Subsequently we met Heather who visited us.
From this first visit we built up a wonderful relationship with Heather who was so kind, understanding and knowledgeable about dementia. Heather was able to explain what Mum was going through and importantly how we should try to react and understand in the various situations. Heather was able to advise and make contact with the hospice and various other medical help. She was like a link and along with Sarah from St Michael’s Hospice they helped to make the situation as good as it could be under the circumstances.
Heather helped us as a family as we had become carers without any prior experience or training for what was happening. With Heather’s guidance and advice we were able to care for Mum at home as was her and our wish all along, it was very difficult and very emotionally draining but along with help from district Nurses, GP and Hospice at home we somehow managed. In the final weeks and days we as a family all worked as a team and did our best day by day and hour by hour learning as we went along.
We will always be so grateful to Heather and the Admiral Nurse organisation for all the help, advice and indeed friendship shown to us.
"Grateful for the help, advice and friendship"
