"Very capable care and support"

About: New Victoria Hospital / Cardiac rehabilitation

(as a service user),

I am a 62 year old lady who having recently suffered a heart attack was referred to the Cardiac Rehab Team at the New Victoria Hospital, Glasgow.

Firstly I met with nurse Susan who was incredibly informative and reassuring  about my heart condition. If I had any further questions after the initial assessment  I was encouraged to contact her,  which I did, and it was never a problem to her. Thank you, Susan.

I was then put into the very capable hands of the physiotherapy team to be assessed for level of fitness and to commence their ten exercise sessions. The sessions involve a warm up, circuit training , cooldown, balance and strengthening exercises.  Also relaxation excercises you can do at home.  The classes last for one hour and fifteen minutes and you can attend twice a week ( Wed and Friday). It is a mixed class of male and female.
As a 62 year old female I was unsure what to expect, but it has truly been one of the most positive experiences of my relatively long life! The team consists of Helen, Louise, William, and Lynne, who were all equally kind, encouraging, and supportive. The classes allowed me to exercise safely and without fear whilst being medically monitored throughout. They check your heart rate during the class and you have a target heart rate.
The classes are a lot of fun, you excercise to music for part of the session, and they will be popular tracks that we all recognise. There is also the comfort in knowing that all who attend are in the same boat, so to speak. It was a very nice group of people, a supportive feel.
The rehab team have played a massive part in the physical and emotional recovery from my heart attack.
You  are reassesd after your ten sessions and if you wish, they can refer you on to a suitable excercise class in your community to help maintain your health and fitness level. I have chosen a class near me and I am extremely grateful to be given this opportunity.
Thank you again Cardiac Rehab Team for your very capable care and support. I will not forget your help in my almost complete and continuing recovery.

Dear travellerez99,

My name is Hilary, I am one of the physiotherapists in the cardiac rehabilitation team at New Victoria Hospital.

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion, it is great to hear about your positive experience of the service.

I am glad you found your assessment with Susan incredibly informative and reassuring about your heart condition and that you knew Susan was available for you to contact at any time and able to help you as needed.

It can be a very daunting time for people after a heart attack and many people do not know what to expect when coming to cardiac rehabilitation. I am delighted to hear you found the team kind, encouraging and supportive and that you felt that it has been one of the most positive experiences of your life.

I know many people who attend the classes find comfort knowing that all who attend are in the same boat and, as you did, enjoy the company and support of others in the class.

I will certainly pass on to Susan, Helen, Louise, William and Lynn your lovely comments. This is really important for the team to know. Saying 'Thank you' means a lot to all our staff.

We are grateful that you took the time to share your story and we wish you well.

Kind regards

Hilary
