"My daughter's experience"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My Daughter is in her early 20s and has diabetes (type 1). She recently visited Wishaw A&E at approx 18:30 with non related diabetic issue. Triaged then waited approx 4 hours, by this time she was in DKA, got taken in and necessary medication given.

Released the next morning 05:30 with a reading of 2.8mmol/L (told by diabetic nurse on previous visit they do not discharge until reading drops  below 1mmol/L ). Went home in a taxi herself feeling really unwell , slept most of the day, tried to eat and take her insulin / correction doses as normal.

As of 17:00 that day .. torso area in pain .. hampered breathing , being sick (DKA symptoms) .. now going further afield to A&E at another hospital.

Because she doesn’t want to go through the same process again at University Hospital Wishaw Lanarkshire.

I cannot understand why Wishaw discharged her?

The whole nation knows the strain the NHS is under and the incredible job the Staff do under increasing pressures, while under-funded which I feel unfortunately leads to many situations like this.

Dear ProperlyfundNHS,

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience of University Hospital Wishaw, Emergency Department.

I am sorry to hear of your daughters experience and that her long wait resulted in a deterioration in herclinical condition. This falls below the standard we aim to provide to our patients and I wish to pass on my sincerest apologies. It must have been a very worrying time for you both. I am also concerned to read that your daughter was discharged home with a low blood glucose level and worsening symptoms that resulted in you both seeking support from another NHS hospital. If you wish to discuss this further, could I please ask that you contact our Patient Affairs department on the below details so they can investigate this further and provide you with a personal response?

I hope your daughter is recovering well from her illness.

Best Wishes,

Julie.
