"Wait time for biopsy results"

About: New Stobhill Hospital / Endoscopy

(as the patient),

Attended Stobhill for colonoscopy during which 2 polyps were removed and sent to labs for biopsy. Was advised results would take approx 22 weeks to be analysed. As one of the polyps was large I am concerned about time waiting for results as it was over 13mm and over 10mm is classed as suspicious. As this polyp was not seen 3 years ago during previous scope I would have thought that this would raise concern levels as polyps are normally slow growing.

With it being impossible for them to be sure that this does not have cancerous changes I would have thought I would receive results of biopsy sooner than specified time.

You may be able to appreciate my concern as this colonoscopy was requested due to investigations into reasons for positive fit test and severe iron deficient anaemia.

Although I have no complaints about actual procedure it is the wait for results that I find unacceptable.

Dear Ama43

Thank you for sharing your concerns regarding your recent colonoscopy at Stobhill Hospital. We sincerely apologise for the distress and anxiety caused by the wait time for your biopsy results. We understand that waiting approximately 22 weeks for results is causing significant concern. The increasing demands on our services have let to longer waiting times and we are working on a range of improvements to reduce our waiting times.

If you contact the health professional who referred you for the test, they may be able to expedite the results.

Please accept our apologies.

Kind Regards

Nicole

Update posted by Ama43 (the patient)

I did contact the clinic 3 weeks post procedure to be advised that the waiting time is currently 22 weeks, as I thought I could have misheard on the actual day due to sedation. I understand the pressures that the NHS is under at present but had thought that at least biopsy results could be expedited by labs as this is really unacceptable wait time. This equates to 5.5 months which is delaying any treatment that patients may need and require.
