"I can start my life again"

About: Telford STaRS

(as a service user),

I thought to myself I was a functioning alcoholic, I work hard! Covid happened and my drinking doubled! To the extent I couldn’t go to work because I was still drunk (or though at first I thought I was ok to drive) so I brought a breath test machine, what my readings came back, I couldn’t drive some days for the whole day.

So alcohol started controlling me, I work around my drinking addiction! I was getting depressed, anxious and everything else that comes with having a drink problem, high blood pressure, high heart rate, night sweats, poor sleep blackouts not knowing what I’ve done the night before! I was in denial for a very long time.

I really enjoyed my time at stars, made new friends, I really think if it wasn’t for stars and the whole team key worker, nurses, and the volunteers, I wouldn’t be telling you this story, I truly believe they saved my life, I can start my life again, I get to birthdays a year now (alcohol free of course).

I just hope I don’t let myself and stars down, and go back to the dark side, I’ve got to be honest with you, when I first stopped drinking I thought what else is there to do? But as soon as I started stars a little light lit up and that light got bigger and bigger the more sessions I went to.

Stars and their fantastic team, helped me through my darkest years , and I really can’t thank them enough, if you throw yourself into the sessions (like I did) it’s a real eye opener, but you’ve got to want it! In the future I will look back at my time with stars with fond memories

Thank you STARS.

Good afternoon Damian372,

Thank you for taking the time to provide this valuable detailed feedback.

It is positive to read about the changes you have made and becoming alcohol free, with support from the wide range of staff within our service. It is important we all work together to support those accessing our service.

I would like to wish you all the best with your continued recovery journey. We are fortunate in Telford to have such a fantastic and engaging Recovery Community, which I would encourage you to be a part of. Organisations such as TACT and ABT have activities regularly in Telford to support those in recovery, as well as fellowships such as AA and NA.

Kind Regards,

Chris Hirst
