"Disabled parking at hospital doors"

About: Royal Victoria Hospital (Belfast)

(as the patient),

New signage up stating maximum 1hr parking. How is it possible to park, get in for an appointment/visit and return to the car all within a 1hr limit? Absolutely ridiculous and no concern for disabled drivers who so desperately need this facility at the doors of the RVH. Disabled drivers would not take advantage of these spaces. Displaying a blue badge should be enough for the parking bay and not limit it to only 1 hour of parking.

Good afternoon

My name is Michelle O`Halloran and I am a Support Services Manager in Patient & Client Support Services. Thank you for taking time to tell us about your carparking experience on the Royal Victoria Hospital site.

The Trust are in the process of changing their parking enforcement contract on acute Trust sites to address significant problems with unauthorised parking. This new contract will be more robust as it will include ANPR technology. This area has always been a pick up/drop off zone with a maximum stay of 30 minutes (see previous contract signage). The BB spaces are to assist with patients/visitors needing picked up/dropped off if a suitable option and to ensure a turnaround of these spaces:

We do have approx. 40 disabled parking spaces within the Main Visitors Carpark with another 25 publicly accessible disabled parking spaces available throughout the site. In addition, patients and visitors who require support on the RVH site to get about can also avail of support (scooters/wheelchairs) booked in advance and free from Shopmobility which is located in the Main Foyer. Staff can also arrange to meet at the Shopmobility unit in the main carpark. To access this service you simply need to register once with Shopmobility which takes about 15 minutes. For more information contact info@shopmobilitybelfast.co.uk or 07385 941991.

Best wishes

Michelle O`Halloran
