"Suspected appendicitis"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

NHS 24 referred to A&E due to symptoms and after triage basically left. Son was doubled in pain and after asking for pain relief whilst we waited it took an hour to receive. Only received as after going back up to reception the nurse went - oh I’ve got the message, here, and took another 20mins to provide. This was after sitting listening to reception/nurse/paramedics stories for an hour. Appreciate it is nightshift but very unprofessional. Another visitor had to go ask what was happening with their brother whom they had come in with via ambulance… the whole of the reception heard the nurse who was yet again in reception chatting but I won’t publish what was said, but made me really angry due to lack of confidentiality and common courtesy skills.

Dear foxtrotmk44,

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience of University Hospital Wishaw, Emergency Department.

I am sorry to hear of your sons experience and his long wait to receive pain relief. This falls below the standard we aim to provide to our patients and I wish to pass on my sincerest apologies for any distress this may have caused. It must have been a very worrying time for you both. I am also concerned to read that you found our staff unprofessional and that you witnessed a conversation that made you very angry. I will share your feedback with the relevant teams to ensure that appropriate learning is undertaken.

I hope your son is recovering well from his illness.

Best Wishes,

Julie.
