"No help regarding my pre dislocated knee"

About: Fife Community Services / Physiotherapy Stirling Care Village / Minor injuries unit Victoria Hospital / Radiology

(as the patient),

I dislocated my left knee in December 2024. I was taken to an NHS Minor Injuries unit in Stirling (it happened there) to be treated. I was given an x-ray and crutches, with a little sheet of paper to strengthen my injured knee and sent away home on the same day. I was told I would be given physio in two weeks' time with NHS Fife but it never happened.

Moved to Kirkcaldy and went to my GP in March as it was 4 months since being told I would receive physio. Explained everything to my GP and they were very surprised I never got it. It wasn't even on my records!

My GP suggested orthopaedics, and informed me that they'd let me know when orthopaedics had got in touch with them.

A week later, my GP phoned me to say that I would get physio first instead of orthopaedics, which I found unhelpful as the extent of my injury meant that it is probably too late for physio.

GP referred me for another x-ray, which I got in  March of this year. X-ray consultant said they'd urgently refer me to something, which they never said. They even went as far to tell me I could go to A&E but it might be too late for that. I found that rather a bizarre and not very helpful statement.

A week after my x-ray I phoned my GP to ask for my results. The phone receptionist says my results could take anything up to four weeks! And I still haven't heard anything from physio.

I am in so much pain every day that even my prescribed codeine doesn't work, despite only taking it when needed. I feel my life has been ruined because of the lack of care I have received from NHS Fife. Can hardly do anything physically because of the pain my pre injured knee has caused me. Unless NHS Fife get their act together and help me then I will continue to suffer.

Overall I am angry at the shocking level of care and I would like to get this looked into.

Dear Little Fury,

I am extremely sorry to hear about your lack of support and follow up of your injury. As a radiographer, we are responsible for performing the correct imaging, and ensuring the images are reported by a radiologist, and report sent back to the GP. Unfortunately, we have no ability in radiology to refer patients to other departments. I am disappointed to hear that you have not been given any physiotherapy or onward referral to orthopaedics to aid your recovery, and hope you receive this soon.

Sincere apologies that I cannot help you further, but hope you get some answers soon,

Best Wishes,

Zoë Maclaughlan

Dear Little Fury,

We are very sorry to hear that you have not had good support from NHS Fife following your injury. We are keen to investigate the issues regarding referral to Physiotherapy and to get you the answers you are seeking. To enable us to do this we require a bit more information which can't be shared on a public forum.

Please could you send an email to Fife.mskhub@nhs.scot giving us your full name and Date of birth so we can check the referral system. Please mark the email for the attention of Murray Maclennan, Lead advanced Practice Physiotherapist. As soon as we have been able to investigate your situation we will get back to you with some answers and arrange the support you need.
Many thanks

Amanda Leech
