"Post partum depression"

About: Community Mental Health Services / Perinatal Mental Health Service

(as the patient),

I had a baby in December 2023, and prior to giving birth I was already feeling depressed. I expressed the need for mental health care to my GP, and to my unborn child's social workers. It took a while for the referral to get through and not too long after my son was born, I had my first appointment with Lynn. She was brilliant, and at the start I saw her once a week. As my mental health started to improve, the frequency of appointments declined. She took over control of my antidepressant prescription and when I was struggling worse than talk therapy could help, she upped the dose.

When she felt that I had more deep seated problems than she was equipped to help me with, she put in a referral for the adult psychological service for me, which had about a year waiting list. She continued to see me until I got my appointments with the adult psychology service, and we recently had our last session and I was discharged. At our last session, she said that she would look out for my name in the years to come again, as I plan to have more children in the future. That was reassuring.

Thanks for taking the time to post on your experience with the perinatal service, it is great to hear that you are doing well and that you got the support you needed. I will ensure Lynn and the rest of the team hear of your feedback, and I am sure they will be appreciative on it.

Good luck in your recovery.
