My brother spent a fortnight in ward 110. The care he received was shocking. He has learning difficulties and had sepsis. Prior to this he had had a bad fall and was in ward 110 then 209. In ward 209 they inserted a catheter (which in my opinion he did not need). This caused the infection and latterly sepsis.
In 110 during his recovery he was left in his bed for days at a time as I was told they did not have the resources to get him up into a chair, even though he was anxious and distraught. He needs to drink with a mug with a lid and straw, but even though I provided this he was left at times with normal mugs of tea left to go cold because he knew it was unsafe for him to attempt to drink them. He was left to lie in his bed and even though him and I both begged for him to be able to defecate in a commode as he could not understand when they told him just to do it in bed as he had on a pad.
One day I found two bags of washing in his cupboard. One was his but the other, when I got it home I realised it wasn't his and was covered in excrement. This had been left by, I presume, the previous patient. I tried and tried to get him the care he deserved but most of the staff just looked through me. One particular trainee nurse was the only one that I saw that actually treated the patients with kindness and patience.
But I only saw him twice as the staff are different every day and night.
My brother has been left traumatised by the care he was given. I just pray to God he has never to go back there again.
