A morbid worrier, I attended the Treatment Centre this morning, 7th April, for a CT scan. Having had a colonoscopy showing a malignant tumour in my bowel, I was understandably not in a good place after several weeks of increasing anxiety.
And then I met my radiologist. If there is a model for how to deal with a patient in the dark throes of uncertainty about his life prospects, it is this amazing clinician.
They gave me the impression that they were utterly focussed on me and my concerns - and not just about today's procedure but my disturbing situation as a whole. They allowed me to express my concerns and answered fully, accessibly and compassionately, whilst remaining completely grounded and realistic.
Kind, re-assuring, supportive, understanding: I run out of adjectives trying to capture this consummate professional's approach.
And in the surgery they were calming, skilful, efficient and completely, quietly, on top of every aspect of my procedure. It was over before I knew it.
I am going through some pretty trying times at the moment but my radiologist has made me feel so much better. If I am to receive this top-drawer treatment from now on, I shall rest easier in my bed.
Also: Every single member of staff I came into contact with at the Treatment Centre - nurses, receptionist, orderlies, every one - was welcoming and utterly professional.
But my radiologist was outstanding.
The Treatment Centre will be recommended by me to everyone I know
