Over recent years, my husband's dementia had been getting worse to the point when, after a very bad fall, I couldn't look after him any more and he was admitted for respite care in a Nursing Home in Bridgnorth. It clearly wouldn't work as a long term placement and so early December 2024 he was admitted to a different home.
Already from November 2023, I had contacted Admiral Nurses for advice and found them extremely helpful with information about the illness and support on a personal level with Nikki who I met face to face on many occasions. She has a wealth of experience with the illness and lots of suggestions about how I could access support - both financial and social. It was great to have someone to understand where I was as a wife and carer, often floundering to know how to deal with my husband and what implications his illness had for our future together.
Nikki was also prompt to reply to emails and phone calls and never left me waiting for a response. Often just unburdening myself was all I needed to be able to move forward - knowing that although Nikki was sympathetic about my husbands situation, it was me that she was there for.
As anyone will know who has cared for a loved one with frontotemporal dementia, the challenges are enormous, both for the family and for the care home where they live.
At the moment my husbands behaviour continues to challenge all around him but I am still supported by Nikki who is there to steer me through the obstacles on the way.
I can't praise Admiral Nurses enough for the service and care they provide.
"She is there to steer me through the obstacles"
