"There are lots of people out there to help"

About: Community Mental Health Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Older people's healthcare Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust / Admiral Nurses Targeted services / Social Care Team

(as a relative),

I am an unpaid carer for my Mother who will be 99 years of age this year. My main aim over the last few years was for her to stay in her own home which are her wishes.

In 2023 I felt mentally and physically exhausted and sought help from my GP who referred me to SilverCloud which was really helpful.

My Mum has now been diagnosed with dementia in Alzheimer’s and the decline in her health has been rapid and it is sad to see that she is now not the Mum that I used to know. The side effects from this awful disease are horrific. She has carers 4 times a day  and domestic visits twice a week but it is still not enough as there are hours during the day that she is alone and then again during the night. Adult Social care have now become involved but it is a long progress and Mum still states that she wants to stay at home. She had 2 weeks respite recently and this made a huge difference to Mum and us as a family as we knew that she was safe.

For me personally I have had the support of the Admiral Nurses team, especially Sarah, who has kept in close contact with me for my wellbeing. She shows understanding and empathy and I feel understood and listened to. I have her contact details and know that I can pick up the phone and contact her or anyone else within The Admiral Nurses team, who are angels. There are lots of people out there to help so I don’t feel alone like I did for many years.

Dear Panda 1974,

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave feedback for the Integrated Admiral Nurse Service- Cornwall.

I am delighted to hear you had such a positive and meaningful experience with our Admiral Nurse Sarah and you found her support to be helpful and supportive. Your story has highlighted some of the challenges carers face when caring for their loved ones living with dementia. I’m glad Sarah was able to be supportive during this time for you and you felt listened to, as well as being able to help you navigate around the health and social care system.

I will be sure to pass your kind words back to the team and especially Sarah.

Thank you,

Caroline Ellis-Service Manager- Integrated Admiral Nurse Service
