My father-in-law was transferred to medical high dependency from the acute medical unit overnight. Despite the frustration at the complete lack of communication by AMU of his deterioration when we had specified we wanted contacted regardless of the time, it was immediately obvious to me how sick he was and that this was a life threatening admission.
The staff respected my knowledge and experience and were amazing at explaining his current numbers, problems and plan which I could then explain to my husband and brother-in-law so they understood the severity of this illness.
They threw every drug and every potential fix at him but it was evident to me and the nurses within the unit that we would not win this fight.
The medical team gave him ample opportunities to improve but thankfully when a noticeable deterioration occurred we were contacted immediately and given time to say out goodbyes before his peaceful passing with us surrounding him.
I’m grateful staff gave him their all and gave him the ending he needed.
Eilidh and Aline from ICU thank you both for your best efforts and understanding.
Jodi, thank you for compassion and assistance in making his ending so peaceful and dignified.
When you are in the profession it’s a very different viewpoint from this side but it’s inspiring to see that amazing care and I know me and my family are so grateful for everything.
"Compassion and assistance"
