"Early Miscarriage"

About: Antrim Area Hospital / Early Pregnancy Unit

(as a service user),

Called my GP as I was bleeding and was advised to call the Early Pregnancy Unit as the GP couldn’t advice

This was my first pregnancy and I had just found out days before I was pregnant I was just over 5 weeks

I rang the EPU and was told on the voicemail that someone would call me back within 24hours. To start with I think this is a disgrace to make anyone who is having any worrying symptoms wait up to 24hours for advice

I got a call back that night which lasted in total 5 minutes! The nurse was advising me while seemingly reading off a script not giving me time to ask questions or take in anything that was being said to me. They said I had an early miscarriage and basically re test in 2 weeks and re contact if my tests are still positive, go to ED it the pain was un bearable.

I asked regarding trying to conceive again and when I could (again as this is my first pregnancy) was told oh no you have to wait until you get your menstrual cycle. I felt like there was no sympathy no support just a 5 minute conversation where I was left with ‘you have had an early miscarriage’

I understand they don’t scan before 7 weeks and this i get, but the lack of sympathy or the fact this was my first time even ringing this line or knowing anything about a miscarriage I felt like it was a tick box exercise to get me off the phone

The nurse on the phone didn’t realise I actually am a nurse myself and I work on a triage phone line for a different specialty as part of my job role -  not early pregnancy so have knowledge and experience of this - and in all my time of triaging I have never treated someone the way I was treated. I never made someone feel like there was a script and it was a tick box to get them off the phone and I never have advised someone they need to wait up to 24hours before getting a call back

I may only have been 5 weeks but that is still my baby and my loss to deal with and I shouldn’t be made feel otherwise

I spoke with my GP the next day who advised me further what an early pregnancy miscarriage is and how it will affect me and my body for moving forward

I know the NHS is under pressure but sympathy and understanding goes a long way in patients times of need!
