"She gave him dignity and peace to face a horrible diagnosis"

About: Community Nursing / District Nursing Dundee Health & Social Care Partnership Stracathro Hospital / Macmillan Centre

(as a relative),

We all know MacMillan nurses are very special people, what I did not know was how much of them selves they put into the job.

I have watched our amazing MacMillan nurse who we fondly called Jenni bird, look after my husband and myself in the last weeks of his life. From diagnosis to him passing was less than two months, that was just a week ago. Jenni had our shock to deal with and my anticipatory grief. My husband wanted to die at home, which he did, with the skill of our family doctor, Amy, Dr Howden, all the truly amazing district nurses who I grew very fond of, and our very special Jenni.

Jenni held my husband's hand through all his decision making, letting him know it was about what he wanted. She held my hand while I tried to help him achieve his wishes.

My husband had gastric and oesophageal stage four cancer that had spread to his liver. Jenni worked really hard to make sure he was as pain free as possible. I don’t think I will ever be able to thank her enough for what she did for both my husband and myself, she gave him dignity and peace to face a truly horrible diagnosis.

Thanks to all the team that worked really hard for my amazing husband and a special thanks to our amazing Jenni.

Dear Bonny,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your story during what must have been a very difficult time for you. It is genuinely our privilege to have the opportunity to offer care and support to our palliative patients and their families and we are really pleased to hear that this has been your experience. I will ensure that this feedback is shared with Jenni.

With best wishes from the Angus Macmillan Service.

Hi Bonny, thank you for sharing your story at such a devastating time for you. I am so glad you had a strong team around you giving you and your husband such valuable support and that Jenni was able to help your husband by giving him dignity and peace. I will make sure Jenni and the rest of the team see you story and they will be able to respond to your kind feedback also. My thoughts are with you.
