"Abrupt and dismissive"

About: Children's Specialist Health Services / Neurodevelopmental Service (NDS)

(as a service user),

I contacted NHS Lanarkshire neurodevelopmental service for children and young people to discuss some concerns I had. I immediately got an abrupt response about not having clinical staff available.

I hadn't even specifically asked to speak to a clinician.

The way the staff member spoke to me was unnecessary. They denied being abrupt however didn't even allow me sufficient opportunity to explain what I actually expected of them and instantly started being defensive about how they can't get involved with things. Considering they have a message on their phone lines about not accepting abusive behaviour, I would say their tone is hypocritical. While I wouldn't describe it as abusive it was extremely dismissive, abrupt and I was very clearly upset by the way I was spoken to. I didn't even receive an apology and just received a defensive response.

I was not intending to complain about the service or long waiting times, I only wanted to discuss some concerns specific to my child's case. I realise that they no doubt deal with a lot of complaints given the lengthy waiting times but I feel this does not excuse immediately cutting people off about discussing any concerns and taking the attitude that they are too busy and important to address the concerns of patients.

Update posted by jupitertm75 (a service user)

Hi, thanks for your response. I posted this a couple of days ago and then you phoned me promptly afterwards. Thank you, I feel much more reassured and have no doubt you have dealt with the matter appropriately with the staff involved. I'd like to think this wouldn't happen again in the future and that staff will be aware that parents and carers may have questions while they wait for assessments or further developments with their case and should feel like they can contact the service and have a positive experience. Again, I am in no doubt you will endeavour to ensure this happens.
