"Care for mother in law"

About: Bellshill Locality Support Service / Community Nursing Team General practices in Lanarkshire

(as a relative),

My mother in law was in end stage COPD. There were health professionals that couldn't do enough for the family as well as my mother in law, and for that i can not thank those nurses enough for the dignity and duty of care they showed my mother in law.

However like everything there are a few rotten apples in the cart that marred that experience. We have had to deal with the doctor from our local practice, who refused to do house calls, refused to complete medication increase from district nurses and also palliative nurses. At one point my sister in law was being past from pillar to post as doctor would advise to contact a staff member and they would advise to go back to doctor what added to my sister in law's stressful situation when you have someone advising you they need help and you can't get the help from anywhere.

On one occasion after toing and froing between dr and staff, one staff member came out to the property and very aggressively and asked my sister in law why does she keep calling when they cant do anything, my sister in law did advise the staff member to watch their tone with her, after they saw how poorly my mother in law was they did apologise to my sister in law for the way they spoke to her, however this put my sister in law in a position where she didnt want to call again for fear of being told off for calling. I get that people can be stressed at their job but at the end of the day that stress shouldn't be passed onto a family with a dying family member.

I cannot thank some staff from the district nurse team and also the palliative team, for the care they gave to my mother in law. They spoke to both my mother in law and the family even when my mother in law was unresponsive they told her what they were doing

Dear Clareb76,

Thank you for sharing your mother in law's experience with her GP surgery.

Please accept my condolences.

I am very sorry to hear about the experience you had with the doctor and how they would not do a house call, given your mother in laws condition. I am also disappointed that there was an issue in them prescribing the medication increase as directed by the nurses attending your mother in law.

Unfortunately, GP practices are independant contractors and as such are not registered to respond on Care Opinion, however they are responsible for investigating any concerns someone has about the practice. Please could I ask that you contact the practice manager to ensure your concerns are raised and investigated and a personal response can be provided?

Best Wishes,

Jenni
