"Experience in nine wells hospital"

About: Maternity care / Antenatal and Postnatal (Ward 38) Maternity care / Labour Suite

(as a service user),

I went into Ninewells last month to give birth to my first baby. In the labour room, the midwives could not have done anything more for us but as soon as me, my baby and my partner got put onto the ward we felt like we were completely forgotten about. Less than 24 hours later, after my blood pressure had been checked, I was told I can go home. I have been given 10 days' worth of injections to do - I wasn’t shown how to do it and I wasn’t given a needle box. I was told to put my used needles in a empty juice bottle. Noone spoke to me about safe sleep or contraception after given birth to my baby, and I had to ask them to remove a cannular out of my hand that had been in from the night before. In the hospital they have put all my details into the system, instead of my baby's as well. I feel like there was a complete lack of communication and care when I was in Ninewells. For a first-time mum you’d think there would be a little more care towards me and my child.

Dear TBMB26

Thank you for taking time to share your experience with our team. I am sorry to hear that your experience in our maternity ward was in contrast to your positive experience of labour suite.

Your story has been shared with the Senior Charge Midwife for the maternity floor for discussion and learning within the team. They will provide a separate response once they have reviewed your key concerns in context of the clinical setting.

It is wonderful to hear you felt your care during your time in labour suite was so positive. I will share this feedback with the midwives.

Feedback both positive and negative is valued within our service to ensure we have womens' voices at the fore of service development and improvement. I am sorry that your experience was mixed and has left you feeling like there was a complete lack of care. This is not what we would like families accessing our services to experience.

Thank you once again for taking time to share your story.

Warm Regards,

Lee-Anne Abel
