"Ultrasound scan"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Ultrasound Scan (Maternity)

(as the patient),

Attended for 12 week scan. Sonographer was unfriendly and made the atmosphere awkward and tense. No attempts at small talk , not very reassuring during the scan so we just sat in awkward silence. The whole experience just felt very uncomfortable, the first thing my partner said when we left the room was how strange the whole thing was. Previous scans we’ve had have been comfortable, but the whole time the probe was on she was pressing down really firmly so they whole scan was painful, and afterwards my stomach was red and marked from it. Luckily all was well with baby but I can’t imagine if we had had a previous loss or got bad news at the scan and she was the one that was there. The experience has made us dread the 20 week scan incase we get the same sonographer.

Dear Uncomfortable mum to be

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. I am very sorry to hear that your 12-week scan was uncomfortable and left you feeling anxious about future appointments. This is certainly not the experience we want for women, and I understand how unsettling it must have been for you and your partner.

Please be assured that we will review this matter and take steps to ensure that all women receive the support and reassurance they need during their scans.

Kind Regards

Nicole
