"Fantastic care of NHS"

About: Galloway Community Hospital / Accident & Emergency Galloway Community Hospital / General Medicine Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as the patient),

Went to dentist and had appointment to have small filling on left side of mouth. On my way to dentist felt a bit nauseous. At dentist was given an anaesthetic injection on left side of my jaw, a short time later I felt awful, flashing lights in my right eye and eventually couldn’t open eye on my right side of face, felt like I was having a stroke.

Didn’t want to cause a fuss but called husband to pick me up as I felt so unwell, couldn’t get balance, felt sick and right eye having spasms.

Ambulance called, paramedics amazing, respecting my privacy in dentists and sent my symptoms to hospital.  At this point I had very high BP which I do suffer from, but had taken my medication earlier that day.

On arrival at hospital, I was met with team of staff who were very attentive. Given brain scan, hear monitor, bloods taken etc. was told I would be taken care off and I felt immediately supported. Was also told an ambulance was waiting if I needed to go to Glasgow for further treatment.

Stroke consultant at Dumfries was consulted which I took part in and felt included and supported. My husband was also informed and supported. Eventually symptoms reduced and stopped.

After various tests etc it was concluded that all my symptoms had been a reaction to injection at dentists. Was advised to meet with GP to discuss my High Blood Pressure and return to A&E if I had any returning symptoms,

My treatment was amazing e.g. immediate, professional, attentive, supportive and yet friendly. A great experience in a stressful situation.

Dear Hazel55,

Thank you for taking the time to share your positive feedback with us following your recent admission to the Galloway Community Hospital. I was pleased to read that you received excellent care from the moment you were brought in by the paramedics and throughout your admission to the Emergency Department.

I was also pleased to read that staff were very attentive to your needs and that all tests were performed, and the information provided to you throughout your examinations provided you with reassurance and support. It was lovely to read that when the Stroke Consultant at Dumfries was contacted, you were part of this discussion. We understand how important good communication is, and I am pleased that you were able to participate in this conversation, feeling supported and informed alongside your husband.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your feedback with us following what would have been a stressful situation, and I am pleased that you were provided with advice on your next steps and worsening advice should you have any returning symptoms. I will be sure to share this feedback with the teams involved with your care, as I know they will appreciate your kind words.

Kind regards

Jamie

Hi Hazel55,

I'm really sorry to hear about your recent illness at the dentist, that must have been really scary for you going through that and I hope you're doing a bit better now.

I see my colleague Jamie at NHS Dumfries and Galloway has already responded on the wider points about your care but I just wanted to thank you for your fantastic comments about our staff at the Scottish Ambulance Service. It is very much appreciated and I'm glad to see that you received such high levels of care from all of the NHS staff who helped you.

Take care and all the very best,

Mark
