I was called as a late replacement for a full hip replacement at 8.00am and asked to get to the ROH by 12.00pm but was not seen in admissions till 5.30pm. The operation was performed that day at 6.00 pm and was back on the ward by 7.30pm. So far so good. I was discharged 2 days later!! even better. The problem is that I was not fully briefed as to the amount of post-op pain that is normal. All the information says that the hip pain stops straight away and you will need some pain killers to take as required for a few days post-op. I have had my staples out and am now 14 days post-op and the pain in the muscles of my thigh are excruciating but I am unable to find out if this is normal. The nurse who removed the staples says the wound is healing well but I can hardly move as the pain is so bad. Do I contact my GP or the ROH or my consultant? there is just not enough post-op information which causes anxiety and delays the relief that a hip replacement should give. So better follow-up information is needed
