My grandfather (84yrs) was admitted to ipswich hospital with a fractured hip. he had never been in hospital all his life. The nurses in A/E started to undress him in a cubicle in full view of myself obviously both he and i were embarrassed, and i left. I explained that he had a prostate problem and as a result of his fractured hip is now bed bound and therefore would need catheterising. when i returned to visit he was in excruitiating pain as his bladder was full and he was unable to pass urine ( nursing staff had put a conveen insitu) this is despite my informing them earlier of his problem.Eventually I found a Dr. who catheterised him.
When I visited him the lady with the tea trolley did not offer him a drink and I asked why she said he cannot manage it lying in bed. The ward was run by agency staff, there was no fluid balance being recorded, no physio (she was off sick) and therefore he spent an entire week in bed without being mobilised and consequently died from broncho pneumonia and that was his first and last experience of ipswich hospital!
