I was referred to the Charles Clifford Hospital March/April 2014, as I was experiencing terrible toothache from a bad root canal procedure that was carried out by my dentist about 20 years ago. I saw an understanding dental consultant. He gave me two options. One was to have the tooth removed and a false tooth to replace it, or I could have the root canal treatment re-done, but it would be very time consuming and I would need two appointments, which would take one and a half hours each, one week apart. He also told me there would be a long wait for this treatment, as they were very busy and I would have to go on the waiting list. I decided to go for the root canal procedure to be re-done, even though I am terrified of dentists.
On my first appointment for the procedure I was terrified. There was no need! The consultant gave the injection to numb the area and I didn't even feel the needle going in. The dentist was very thorough and was always asking if I was OK whilst the procedure was taking place. I soon relaxed and stopped worrying. The worst part was that my jaw ached with having to have my mouth open for one hour and 40 minutes. I had a temporary filling and had to go back a week later for the temporary filling to be removed, a little bit of treatment and a permanent filling to be put in. He did warn me that the tooth area may be sore that evening but it would gradually feel better. The gum started to throb the same night of the first treatment and I was quite worried that all the infection was not out. But it gradually eased.
I went on holiday a week later with an easy mind and no pain whatsoever. My overall treatment was first class, due to having a caring dentist and dental nurse. If I could have my regular dental check ups at the Charles Clifford hospital, I would never worry about visiting the dentist again. I had every confidence in the staff there. They were very helpful and kind. The consultant dentist that treated me had just received confirmation that he had a permanent post at the Charles Clifford Hospital, and rightly so.
I just wish there was less waiting time for appointments.
