My partner had a circumscision today. Initially we were both disappointed at the lack of consultation rooms in the admissions lounge area, and despite having had a consultation in a bay where everyone could hear about an intimate procedure the staff, in particular the nursing staff's attitudes, more than compensated for the lack of privacy. We both found the staff reassuring, informative and compassionate. Whilst waiting for the anesthetic my partner enjoyed the humour of the assistant surgeon and felt relaxed and at ease. When my partner was taken to the recovery bay he was supported by nurses who were attentive and clearly caring and compassionate. I was contacted by phone regularly with updates by a burse. She also took time out to explain what vital signs readings meant to my partner and kept him topped up with coffee. Then, in the short stay ward, I arrived to find my partner in no discomfort and with staff regularly checking on him and how he was feeling. He had been provided with a "snack box" - which had a great variety of food. We cannot thank the senior staff nurse on the short stay ward enough: whilst clearly busy she was friendly and had good humour. She was clearly knowledgable, compassionate and an excellent nurse. She took time working through the discharge plan with us and ensured my partner was comfortable throughout, offering further pain relief before we left - Thank you to both nurses! And to the rest of the staff who supported us today.
