Do not be disillusioned, this procedure was very painful even with sedation. The staff on the whole were very professional, caring and friendly - however the doctor performing this procedure was not. The nurse couldn't get the cannula into my arm, so the doctor decided to do it in my hand - fine- but the way he was speaking to me in a raised manner to relax was not nice at all. All I can remember is sheer pain for the actual colonoscopy itself, although I don't think it was actually painful for the whole time, it just seemed to be a rush, no chance for any stopping, it was just completely awful. I went in to the recovery area and expected to feel drowsy but did not, was completely wide awake - is this how sedation works? I researched colonoscopy on the internet and every procedure I watched with sedation, the patient was definitely not in any pain; this is why I chose the option of sedation. If a colonoscopy does hurt then you should tell your patients - do not disillusion them by saying it is just "uncomfortable". Also the next day my insides feel very tender and sore - nobody told me that this would happen. I feel traumatised by what happened, and if friends or family want to know what the procedure is like, I will definitely tell them it's dreadful.
