I had a huge ovarian cyst removed, and a radical hysterectomy on 6th October 2014. My surgical team were fantastic, my surgeon put me at my ease, despite the scary risk factors involved with such a large operation in my particular circumstances. The operation was very successful and thanks to the exceptional post surgery care that I received in both the ICU (where I spent the first night post op) and the careful nursing and physiotherapy support I received on Elstead ward I was able to leave hospital 3 days earlier than expected. I received a visit from at least one of the surgical team every day that I was in hospital.the morning after the operation the surgical team even found time to sit down with my very worried husband to explain the fine detail of the operation, which he felt was really useful and helped him to be a lot less worried. I could not have been looked after any better all the staff that I had contact with, from the tea lady to the senior surgeons were helpful, professional and very caring and supportive. Unfortunately it turned out that there was a small early stage ovarian cancer within the cyst that was removed and I was then transferred to the care of the Oncology dept. They arranged the chemotherapy that I needed to be absolutely sure that no cancer remained, they explained everything really carefully so that I understood the full implications of either going ahead with the treatment (which I have done) or not doing so and what the risk of doing nothing might be. The nursing team delivering the chemotherapy on Onslow ward (within St Luke's cancer centre) have been great, the appointments have run to time and they make sure that the take home meds are ready for me. Finally I have to mention the team of specialist nurses, who supported me in the lead up to my operation and continued to do so during my post op recovery and now through my chemotherapy, they have been invaluable and it is a huge reassurance, during such a worrying and frightening time, to know that they are on the end of the phone to talk to about anything. They have always made time to answer questions for both me and my husband and we have never been made to feel that our questions are silly. I would wholeheartedly recommend this hospital and its wonderful staff to anyone.
