I'm being treated at LGI fracture clinic for a broken ankle. At my last appointment I was allowed (after 13 weeks) to start walking in normal shoes without crutches while at home. I was scheduled for another follow up in 6 weeks and at the end of the appointment my consultant very clearly said "If you get any new pain or new swelling give us a ring. "
After a few days walking I started to get pain in my foot. Over the next 10 days or so it gradually got worse and more focussed and I realised that I might have a stress fracture in my foot. I rang the fracture clinic and they were brilliant - they put me through to a senior nurse, who agreed I needed to come in and even offered to see me the same day. We decided to wait another week because it can take a while for a stress fracture to show on x-ray.
I went back as planned, they did another x-ray and my consultant confirmed that I probably do have a new stress fracture, and was able to sort me out with a special 'heel walking' shoe that means that I can continue to bear weight on my ankle (to help it heal) while sparing the bones in my foot. Perfect.
Everybody at clinic was - yet again - really helpful, including receptionists, nurses and x-ray technicians. It's so lovely to get a positive reaction that you've done the right and responsible thing in coming back with your problem, rather than be made to feel like a nuisance.
Back again in another 3 weeks as planned, when hopefully both fractures will be healed properly.
"Great service at LGI fracture clinic"
